    Local Note:
Rock art specialists can obtain accurate though imprecise dates for pictures. The earliest central Saharan pictures are the engravings of the "Naturalistic Bubaline" school and the "Round Head" paintings. Along with tropical wild animals which are only compatible with a wet phase of the C14 dated diagram, numerous unquestionably domestic animals are already represented by both schools. The dates for the beginnings of domestication, which would thus be post quem dates for the pictures, have been provided by archaeozoology; linguistic data, however, suggest much earlier dates. The reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. In conclusion, the earliest central Saharan rock art schools fit into the "Neolithic Humid Phase," around 4,000-2,000 BC. -- original abstract.
