The carnival of Guinea-Bissau.
Author:
Crowley, Daniel J., 1921-
Title:
The carnival of Guinea-Bissau.
Notes:
Illustrations, map.
Carnival in Bissau, a legacy of the Portuguese, is unexpectedly original, deriving masking ideas and imagery not from traditional Bijogo or Balante masks but from imported comic book characters. Monster masks of papier-mache, brilliantly colored and masks on doctor/vaccination theme -- the officially designated theme for Carnival in the year Crowley observed -- were no less vibrant than the village groups who danced in somewhat more "traditional" costumes. The city groups with their monsters and syringes, oddly, had no dances or even music!
Originally presented at the 30th annual meeting of the African Studies Association, Denver, Colorada, 1987.
