Les masques de l'ouest ivoirien et l'art occidental.
Author:
Verger-Fèvre, Marie-Noël
Title:
Les masques de l'ouest ivoirien et l'art occidental.
Notes:
It was at the 1900 universal exposition that a mask from Côte d'Ivoire was first publicly exhibited in Paris, and Picasso is believed to have visited this exposition, as it coincided with his first trip to Paris. The influence of "art nègre" on Picasso and the French and German artists has been much written about; Verger-Fèvre further suggests that masks from western Côte d'Ivoire, which were particularly influential on the German artists, were not seen in Europe until after 1912 when the French pacification in that part of the country began in earnest.
