    Bio. / Hist. Note: 
    Ordinances, rules and bye-laws for the government of the Alms- House and House of Employment of the city of New York on Blackwell's Island were printed by Samuel Loudon circa 1785. By 1821 the commissioners were also responsible for the Bridewell (jail) and later the peniteniary. The commission was replaced in part by the city Dept. of Public Welfare.

    Summary: 
    Disbound printed forms, all but one with ms. insertions. Forty of the documents have been cancelled and the signatures cut away. Trades involved are varied including servant, farmer, cabinet maker, hair-dresser, book binder and ladies shoe maker. Most of the indentures were sealed and delivered in the presence of John Hunter and bear his signature.
